Knee Replacement Recovery: What to Expect

Dr. Chirag Kalathiya2026-07-08

Total knee replacement is one of the most successful orthopaedic surgeries. Knowing what to expect during recovery can help you return to normal life faster.

First few days after surgery

Most patients begin walking with support within 24 hours. Physiotherapy starts immediately to prevent stiffness and build strength.

First six weeks

You will gradually increase walking distance and perform daily exercises. Swelling and discomfort are normal and usually improve with time.

Three to six months

By this stage, most patients can walk without support, climb stairs and resume light activities. High-impact sports should still be avoided.

Follow your surgeon and physiotherapist's advice closely for the best long-term outcome.
