Understanding Frozen Shoulder: Causes and Treatment

Dr. Chirag Kalathiya2026-07-15

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It typically develops slowly and can last for months or even years.

What causes frozen shoulder?

The exact cause is often unknown, but it is more common in people with diabetes, thyroid disorders, or those who have kept their shoulder immobile for a long time after injury or surgery.

Stages of frozen shoulder

  • Freezing stage: Shoulder movement becomes painful and range of motion starts to decrease.
  • Frozen stage: Pain may reduce but stiffness remains, making daily activities difficult.
  • Thawing stage: Movement gradually improves over several months.

Treatment options

Most cases improve with physiotherapy, stretching exercises and pain medication. In more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or arthroscopic capsular release may be recommended.
